Behind the Designs: Creating My New Retro Graphic Tee Collection

There's something timeless about a great retro t-shirt. Bold typography, expressive characters, warm vintage colors, and artwork that feels like it could have been discovered in an old roadside gift shop or a 1970s national park souvenir stand.

That's exactly the feeling I wanted to capture with my newest collection.

Over the past few days, I've been designing a growing a series of playful retro-inspired graphics that combine nostalgic illustration styles with modern humor. Every design starts with a simple idea: take a familiar saying or pun and build an entire little world around it.

Whether it's a bee lifting weights, a surfing hermit crab, or a UFO stealing a very confused cow, every illustration is designed to tell a tiny story.

Bringing Personality to Every Design

Instead of creating simple clip-art graphics, I wanted every character to have its own personality.

Some are confident.

Some are surprised.

Some are completely overwhelmed.

Others simply don't care.

That's where the fun begins.

The collection includes ten designs:

  • UN-BEE-LIEVABLE! – a determined little bee showing off its strength.
  • BERRY NICE! – a cheerful strawberry tipping its hat with a bouquet of flowers.
  • HOLY COW! – an unsuspecting cow getting abducted by a UFO.
  • OH CRAB! – a frantic crab realizing a giant wave is about to crash.
  • SHELL YEAH! – a surfing hermit crab living its best beach life.
  • LEAF ME ALONE! – a happy hiking maple leaf enjoying the forest.
  • NO PROB-LLAMA! – an adventurous llama ready for the trail.
  • STICK WITH ME! – a cowboy cactus giving a confident thumbs-up.
  • WATT?! SERIOUSLY?! – an electrified lightbulb having a complete meltdown.
  • I NEED SPACE – a sleeping astronaut peacefully floating among the stars.

Every illustration includes its own themed environment filled with small details like flowers, mushrooms, mountains, bees, stars, ocean waves, tractors, camping gear, and other tiny elements that help bring each design to life.

The Retro Style I Love

One thing you'll notice throughout the collection is that every design shares a consistent visual style.

I intentionally leaned into a vintage mascot aesthetic featuring:

  • Thick black outlines
  • Warm muted color palettes
  • Cream-colored typography
  • Slight distressed screen-print textures
  • Bold expressive faces
  • Classic 1970s-inspired composition

The goal wasn't to make the artwork look old.

The goal was to make it feel nostalgic while still looking fresh enough to wear every day.
